Sudan: Despite the appeal for a ceasefire, fighting continued on Eid day, 413 people were killed
Despite calls for a ceasefire in Sudan, fighting continues in the capital, Khartoum, while bombings and shelling were reported at various locations on Friday.
According to the AFP news agency, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and US Secretary of State Anthony Blanken called for a three-day ceasefire on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr, but the warring parties continue to fight despite the appeal.
The Central Committee of Doctors of Sudan has said in a statement that on the last night of the month of Ramadan, there were explosions in many places in Khartoum and fighting between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continues.
The statement asked all the citizens to exercise caution and stay at home while demanding immediate cessation of hostilities from both rivals to take responsibility and save innocent lives.
US Secretary of State Anthony Blanken condemned the fighting in a separate telephone conversation with the two generals on Friday and called for a nationwide ceasefire by the end of Eid al-Fitr on April 23.
After a few weeks of struggle for power between the army chief of the Sudanese army Abdul Fateh al-Barhan and the head of the paramilitary rapid support forces, Muhammad Hamdan Daqlo, fierce clashes between the two forces began in the capital Khartoum.
On Friday, on the occasion of Eid, the Chief of Army Staff of the Sudanese Army, Abdul Fateh al-Barhan, spoke on television, but during that time, he did not talk about reconciliation.
He said in his address that blood is flowing in our country on Eid this year. Destruction, desolation and the sound of gunfire have replaced happiness.
"I hope that we will come out of this ordeal more united, as an army, as a people."
The United Nations World Health Organization said on Friday that 413 people have been killed and 3,551 injured in the fighting so far.
The World Food Organization has suspended operations in Sudan after three of its staff were killed in fighting.
